Waimangu Valley Day Out
Visit one of New Zealand's most impressive geothermal valley's, Waimangu, site of our most significant recent volcanic eruption. Learn about the 1886 Mt Tarawera volcanic event, its people, and the resulting dramatic landscape changes that created the world’s youngest geothermal valley. Enjoy an easy walk down the valley and then board the boat for a cruise on Lake Rotomahana.
Waimangu is a completely natural and wholly protected eco system, the only geothermal system created within written history (the last 5000 years) and as a direct result of a volcanic eruption. A unique opportunity to understand nature, unique geothermal features and an amazingly diverse environment.
Our guided walk down the gentle slope of the valley is just 1.5km, or if you want to, do the full 4km walk instead of using the shuttle bus to the lake edge. Here you board the boat to explore this amazing natural environment that has been unaltered by man since its creation in 1886. The youngest of New Zealand's large, naturally formed lakes, Lake Rotomahana is New Zealand's original tourist attraction. At the end of the lake cruise a shuttle bus brings you back to the starting point. We allow plenty of time to have lunch [at your cost] and browse the gift shop during our visit.
