Katikati & Waihi Beach Day Out
Join our small group Day Out to see some local highlights of the Bay of Plenty, just a short drive up the coast.
Time to explore closer to home today, as we visit our ‘Mural Town’ of Katikati. First stop is the fabulous Western Bay Museum, inside the instantly recognisable historic Old Fire Station, you will discover the only museum in the Bay of Plenty and one of Aotearoa’s hidden-gems. With high-quality interactive exhibitions and fun tour-experiences, we bring to life the pioneering spirit of the local Māori, Ulster Irish and all other settlers who together built this area.
Here we will be treated to a ‘step back in time’ guided tour including authentic and authentic morning tea, cooked in the old school way with scones cooked on the range, and tea served in old bone china.
Every town and settlement in New Zealand has its history, together, they form the story of our people, of Maori and Pakeha. In Katikati you can see that history every day, not in a gallery but by walking down the main street, so after our museum visit we will take a stroll to enjoy some of the many murals that the town is famous for and say high to Harry!. Leaving Katikati behind we head up to the the Waihi Beach RSA for lunch. Their famous buffet lunch is always a hit with diners, and the RSA commands wonderful views out over the coast. On our way home we will visit historic Bowentown, and admire the sweeping vistas of the Bay and Matakana Island.
